After the battle with Nappa and Vegeta, Tien, Yamcha, Piccolo, and Chaozu were dead, and Goku severely injured. Bulma, Krillin, and Gohan learn of the Dragonballs on Namek. Thay also learn that they can wish a person back to life as many times Porunga sees fit. They had to travel to Namek and wish for their friends back there because Kami vanished when Piccolo died, thus causing the Earth's Dragonballs to disappear. Goku does not go with them, for he's too weak.
They fly to Namek, and on their way, they meet many different things. They finally reach Namek to learn that Frieza had already gethered 5 of the 7 Namek Dragonballs. Krillin and Gohan leave Bulma in a safe place and fly towards Guru's house. Guru helps Krillin release his hidden power and gives Krillin the Dragonball he had. Meanwhile, after rejuvenating himself, Vegeta flies over to Namek to find the Dragonballs and wish for immortality. Goku gets better and uses a special ship to fly to Namek. The ship could raise the gravity up to 100x Earth's normal, so Goku's strength increased greatly.
Krillin, with a Dragonball, learns that when Guru dies, the Dragonballs will disappear, and that's soon. Vegeta finally arrives and he too collects a Dragonball. He buries his underground for safe keeping. Vegeta battles Zarbon, who nearly kills him. Frieza had Vegeta rejuvenated so he could tell him where the last two Dragonballs are hidden. Vegeta escapes and steals the 5 Dragonballs Frieza had. Frieza orders Zarbon to chase after Vegeta and kill him. Also to take the Dragonballs back.
Krillin and Gohan leave their Dragonball with Bulma and fly to Guru so he can release Gohan's hidden power. Along the way, they find a Dragonball. Vegeta found out that Gohan had a Dragonball and quickly flew over to Guru's. Vegeta gets to Guru's at almost the same time, only Gohan's power was already released. Zarbon finally reaches Vegeta and they fight. Zarbon, not having the knowledge about the saiya-jin gene that makes them stronger after every battle, was easily defeated by Vegeta. Krillin, seeing that he had no chance at beating Vegeta, gave up the Dragonball without hesitation. Vegeta, Gohan and Krillin make an aggreement to team up and defeat Frieza. They go to where Bulma was hidding and gets their other Dragonball. They fly to the location where the other 5 Dragonballs were hidden. Frieza called the Ginyu Force to retrieve the Dragonballs back. The Ginyu force beats Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin to the spot and using their powers, claimed the all 7 Dragonballs from the trio. Captain Ginyu returns the balls to Frieza, but he is unable to make a wish because he did not know the password. The Ginyu Force play Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who would fight first. Gerundo was first against Krillin and Gohan. He could stop time for as long as he could hold his breath, so he had the upper hand until Vegeta blasted and decapitated Gerundo. Recoome is up to battle and beats up Vegeta.
Krillin was taken out in one kick to the head. Gohan is the only one left and he managed to get a few hits in, but was too beaten. Captain Ginyu was left to watch the Dragonballs as Frieza flew to Guru's for the password. Goku finally arrives and beats Recoome in one punch. Burter and Jeice were no match for him either. Burter was knocked out and Jeice went back to Captain Ginyu for help. Goku gives Sensu bean to Krillin, Gohan and even Vegeta. Captain Ginyu has the other Ginyu Force wannabes bury the Dragonballs. Vegeta flies away from the battle to find the Dragonballs and so do Krillin and Gohan. After realizing he couldn't beat Goku, Captain Ginyu switches bodies with him.
Back at Guru's, he senses Frieza's approach and sends Dende to tell Gohan and Krillin the password. Frieza arrives and fights three of the strongest Nameks, but they were no match for him. He then fights Nail, and finds out that they were stalling and Dende had the password. Frieza rushes off to the Dragonballs, forgetting to kill Nail. Vegeta gets to Frieza's ship, only not finding the Dragonballs. He decides to wash up. Gohan and Krillin get there, and using the Dragonball Radar, invented by Bulma, found the buried Dragonballs. Vegeta notices they found the balls and waits until they summon Porunga. They can't because they did not know the password.
Ginyu, in Goku's body, reaches the ship and asks Krillin if he made a wish yet. Goku arrives and tells them to attck Ginyu in his body. They do and are winning. Vegeta steps into the battle and beats up Ginyu even more. Ginyu tries to switch bodies with Vegeta, but fails when Goku jumps in front of the beam, switching him back to his old body. Ginyu tries again but Goku throws a frog into the beam. Vegeta takes Goku back the the sythetic saiya-jin DNA thing to heal Goku and decides he needs a nap. He goes to sleep when Dende arrives. They take the Dragonballs to a nearby island and summon Porunga. Piccolo intervines telepathically, and tells them to wish him back. He says that if he is back then Kami will be back too and then they can wish for Tien, Yamcha, and Chaozu back. Gohan tells Dende to wish Piccolo back and it is done. Their next wish is to wish Piccolo back to Namek so he can fight Frieza. Vegeta wakes up and notices that Porunga has been summoned and is very angry. Frieza, on his way back also notices Porunga, and he is also upset. Vegeta rushes to the scene and is about to kill Krillin and the others when they tell him there's one wish left. Dende is about to ask for Vegeta's immortality when Guru dies and the Dragon disappears. Frieza gets to the scene and sees that the dragon is gone and so is his wish for immortality.
Piccolo now on Namek, rushes toward Gohan because he can sense his little friend is in danger. Piccolo finds the beaten Nail and merges with him to become stronger. Vegeta proves to be an even match for Frieza until he transforms to his next stage. He ramms Krillin in the stomach and nearly kills him. Dende heals Krillin afterwrds when Vegeta is fighting Frieza. Gohan thought Krillin was dead and started fighting Frieza. He does get a few hits, but is smacked around by Frieza. Catching Frieza off guard, Krillin cuts off his tail. Krillin leads Frieza away while Dende heals Gohan. Piccolo comes and fights Frieza, but is no use. Frieza is much too strong. Gohan gets really mad and lands a few key blows. Dende goes to heal Piccolo and Vegeta tells Krillin to blast him, so he can be healed by Dende and get strong enough to to beat Frieza. Krillin blasts Vegeta, but Dende won't heal him. Finally he does and Vegeta kicks him for not healing him sooner. He fights Frieza after Frieza transforms again, but is no match. He is beaten very badly by Frieza, and when Frieza was about to kill Vegeta, Goku comes.
Vegeta tells Frieza that Goku is a super saiya-jin, and mocks Frieza, then Frieza shoots him with a lazer beam. Before dying, Vegeta tells Goku that he must kill Frieza and avenge the destruction of their home planet, entire saiya-jin race, and the death of both their biological fathers. He also tells him that Frieza must be defeated by saiya-jin hands inorder for the saiya-jin race to be avenged.
Goku is deeply moved and when Vegeta dies, Goku gives him a proper burial. Goku promises Vegeta that he'll defeat Frieza.
Goku and Frieza finally get started with their battle and neither seemed to be winning. Their powers were matched. Using an energy ball, Frieza paralyzes Goku and starts beating him up. Goku survives the beating. Frieza says that he could beat Goku with his hands behind his back. He doesn't last long because he needed to use both his hands for defense.
Meanwhile, Bulma, lost somewhere, takes a liking to a particular frog, which is actually Captain Ginyu, but she doesn't know. She finally creates a device that translates animal's voice into understandable words. Ginyu shouts change and takes Bulma's body. Ginyu rides Bulma's speeder to the fight scene with Bulma hanging on the seat for dear life. Ginyu arrives on the scene and makes everyone suspicious. Gohan and the others quickly find out that Ginyu has taken Bulma's body. He yells "change" at Piccolo, but Bulma jumps infront of the beam and is returned to her own body. Captain Ginyu is a frog again.
On the battle field, Goku tried clever tactics, but was matched by Frieza on every move. Goku was being badly beaten up when he decides to use the Spirit Bomb he learned at King Kai's. Holding his arms in the air, Frieza had no idea what he was doing, Goku began gathering energy. Frieza stands there watching and then decides to attack. Piccolo instructs the others to give some of their energy to Goku's Spirit Bomb. They do as they're told and then Piccolo rushes off to buy Goku some time. No match for the very powerful Frieza, Piccolo is smacked around. Gohan and Krillin decide to intervene using their blasts. Goku is finally done gathering energy, when Frieza was about to fire his energy ball at Krillin and Gohan. Frieza looks up and sees the Spirit Bomb coming towards him, vaporizing his energy ball. Frieza is struck down into the water and our heros think he's dead. They collect themselves to a small patch of land and begin celebrating when out pops Frieza. He fires a lazer beam at Goku, but Piccolo bravely pushes him out of the way, getting severely injured, almost dead. Frieza grabs Krillin next and Goku begs him to spare Krillin, but Frieza just blew him up anyway. Goku is enraged and transforms into a super saiya-jin. This is the first time we see a super saiya-jin.
Meanwhile up at King Kai's planet, Tien, Yamcha, and Chaozu fight the Ginyu Force, which the exception of Captain Ginyu. They win and send each of the Ginyu Force to the Bloody Pond. (That's in heck.)
On Namek, Goku instructs Gohan to take the barely living Piccolo to his space ship, get Bulma, and leave. Gohan follows his commands and leaves. Frieza was about to blast Gohan when Goku comes up and crushes his hand. Frieza and Goku battle it out and with all his fustration devises a plan. He makes another energy ball and sends it to Namek's core. He tells Goku that the planet will explode in 5 minutes and they will all die except for himself. He tells Goku that he doesn't need air to live, so he'll be victorious.
On Earth, Kami has returned and contacts King Kai, telling him that Mr. Popo has collected all the Dragonballs and they can make a wish. After a series of questions asked by King Kai, they finally decide to wish everyone Frieza killed back. That means Guru will come back, also the Dragonballs. They make the wish and it works. Guru is contacted by King Kai and recieves instructions to send a Namekian to Porunga to make the last wish. Guru sends Dende to wish all the people on Namek back to Earth except Frieza and Goku. Goku had requested to be left there to finish his fight with Frieza. Frieza sees that Porunga is back and decides to quickly fly over there and wish for immortality. Goku tries to stop him, but doesn't succeed. Frieza gets there and makes his wish. Quickly after Frieza made his wish Dende makes his wish in their native tongue and everyone is transported to Earth. Vegeta was also at the scene and was about to blast Frieza when he was transported to Earth also. Goku makes fun of Frieza and they continue fighting.
Much later on Earth, Guru decides it's really the time for him to go and he passes the Dragonball powers to another Namek and passes away. The new leader is given the task of watching the Dragonballs and taking the place where Guru left off.
On Namek, Goku and Frieza keep battling, Goku with the upper hand. Goku then decides Frieza is no longer a challenge and slowly flies away. Frieza is greatly angered by this insult and throws a Distructo Disc at Goku, who manages not to get hit. Frieza becomes more angry and throws a second Distructo Disc. Goku manages to outwit Frieza and Frieza slices himself in half by his own attack. Almost dead, Frieza begs for Goku to help him. Goku, with his soft heart, gave Frieza some of his Ki and tells him to get off the planet and just drift in space for awhile. Angered, Frieza uses Goku's given energy to attck him. Goku calls Frieza a fool and fires a blast finishing off Frieza. (Frieza is assumed dead by Goku, but he later returns in the Android Saga.) Goku rushes to Frieza's ship and tries to get it working, but it fails. He screams some naughty things and the planet explodes. Though, his whereabouts are unknown at that time, rest assure, Goku is far from dead.
Meanwhile on Earth, the Nameks live with Bulma for awhile and some of them learn to play golf. They use the Namekian Dragonballs to wish Goku back, but Porunga tells them that Goku doesn't want to come back yet and that he is not dead. Surprised at that, they use the first wish to bring back Krillin to Earth's checking Point. Their seond wish was to bring Krillin to Earth. They use the last wish to bring back Yamcha. One Namek year later, they use the Dragonballs to bring back Tien and Chaozu. The last wish was to transport all the Nameks, with the exception of Piccolo, to New Namek. The new and lasting friends bid their farewells and disappear to New Namek. Porunga disappears and the Dragonballs are transported to New Namek, where they scatter. This is the end of the Frieza Saga. Goku comes back in the next saga, the Cell Saga.
